Ecommerce - The Past, Present, and Projecting the Future

Today, we can order a product on Amazon and receive it the very next day. If you told someone from 20 years ago that a company could offer that kind of service on millions of products, they would find that statement hard to believe. With the emergence of Amazon and other e-commerce companies, shipping in under a week is standard and often expected due to Amazon continually raising the bar. This is because of the rapid growth of e-commerce in the global economy. E-commerce is the buying and selling of goods and services or transmitting funds/data, over an electronic network, primarily the internet.

This paper will analyze the growth of e-commerce and its place in the global market in comparison to retail. Because of what statistics suggest, many business owners, and some experts believe that e-commerce will overtake physical retail in 2024, quoted at a 2018 conference called “Retail’s Big Show”. And I believe this to be the case because of the existing evidence I will bring to light in this paper.

After defining the history of e-commerce, the core of this paper will highlight the effect technological advancements will have on the growth of e-commerce globally. To predict the future of eCommerce I need to dissect the possibility that the e-commerce industries’ growth would plateau at a point before being able to overtake physical retail sales. Comparing the advantages and limitations of online and physical retail will be effective for measuring the value of the service to the consumer.

A large barrier that would prevent people around the world from engaging in e-commerce is digital literacy. The last part of this paper will analyze the global increase of digital literacy and its effect on e-commerce. These topics of focus will work to support my thesis that e-commerce will eventually overtake traditional retail (likely by 2024) in the number of sales because of its almost inevitable growth.
